Home health is a staffing and price outlier

Accelerating Updated September 18, 2026 · High confidence

What changed

Consumer prices for home health care were 10.6% higher in August than a year earlier, compared with a 2.5% increase for medical-care services overall. Home health care services also added roughly 11,000 jobs in August.

The two series measure different things, but both point to unusually strong pressure in home health.

Why it matters

Home health is labor-heavy and route-heavy. Travel time, scheduling and reimbursement can matter as much as the billed visit itself. Fast price growth can help revenue per visit, but it can also make private-pay clients more resistant and draw more attention from payers.

What it means for your business

Measure contribution by visit type after travel and other nonbillable time. Group appointments geographically where you can, and flag visit types that repeatedly produce overtime or long drive time.

If prices need to move, tie the change to the actual service and route economics. Private-pay operators can also test minimum visit lengths, bundles or tighter scheduling windows before applying the same increase to every client.

What to watch

Watch wages, payer changes and the ratio of travel time to billable time. A busy calendar can still lose money if routing gets worse.
