Diners are still spending — but value pressure is intensifying

Persistent Updated September 18, 2026 · Medium-high confidence

What changed

The latest consumer data point to a restaurant market that is holding up overall while becoming more divided underneath. Restaurants remain consumers’ top discretionary spending priority, but inflation, higher gasoline costs and household financial pressure are making many diners more selective about frequency, occasion and price.

That tension is already visible in restaurant traffic. In July, 49% of operators reported lower customer traffic than a year earlier while 40% reported higher traffic. July was the 17th month out of the previous 18 in which operators reported a net decline in customer traffic, even though industry sales continued to grow.

Why it matters

The useful conclusion is not simply that 'consumers are cutting back.' Higher-income and financially secure households continue to support spending, while more pressured diners are scrutinizing what they get for the money. Two restaurants in the same market can therefore experience very different demand depending on price point, occasion and customer base.

For operators, indiscriminate discounting can be as dangerous as ignoring value pressure. Cutting prices for customers who would have paid full price sacrifices margin without necessarily creating more visits.

What it Means for Your Own Business

Build a clear value ladder instead of making the whole menu cheaper. Give price-sensitive guests an obvious way to dine with you at a lower check—such as a smaller plate, prix-fixe option, weekday special or thoughtfully priced entry item—while preserving premium dishes and add-ons for customers who are still willing to spend.

Use promotions to solve specific weak periods rather than discounting your busiest services. If Tuesday is soft but Saturday is full, a Tuesday offer can create incremental traffic; a Saturday discount mostly gives away margin. Track redemptions, repeat visits, check averages and whether promotions attract new demand or simply subsidize existing customers.

What to watch

Watch traffic by restaurant segment and check size, consumer financial confidence, gasoline prices and promotion activity. For your own business, compare visit frequency, average check and sales by daypart or weekday so you can see where value pressure is actually appearing rather than treating every guest the same.
