Sony Pictures has unveiled the inaugural trailer for “Madame Web,” a suspense thriller featuring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, set in the expansive Marvel character universe.
Dakota Johnson assumes the role of Cassandra Webb, a paramedic based in Manhattan, who may possess clairvoyant abilities, granting her insight into the future and the intricacies of the interconnected spider world. The trailer showcases her forming an alliance with a trio of young women, including Sydney Sweeney’s Julia Carpenter. In the comics, Julia eventually adopts the persona of Spider-Woman. Together, they navigate Cassandra’s past and confront the challenges of the perilous present.
The ensemble cast of “Madame Web” includes Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Zosia Mamet.
Following the success of Sony Pictures Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” there is evident enthusiasm for narratives involving wall-crawling and web-swinging. “Madame Web” marks the latest installment in Sony’s Marvel Character universe, joining previous releases such as Tom Hardy’s “Venom” (2018), “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), and Jared Leto’s “Morbius” (2022).
Upcoming projects for Sony include a third installment of “Venom” scheduled for November 8, 2024, and “Kraven the Hunter,” featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, set to hit theaters on August 30, 2024. Notably, “Madame Web” stands out as Sony’s initial foray into a comic book adaptation with a woman in the lead role.
“S.J. Clarkson, known for directing Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘The Defenders,’ takes the helm for ‘Madame Web,’ working from a screenplay she co-wrote with Claire Parker. The movie is slated to premiere in theaters on February 14, 2024.”
