What changed?

The Consumer Price Index rose 0.6% in September and 3.7% from a year earlier, up from 3.4% annual inflation in August. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% in the month and accounted for more than half of the overall monthly CPI increase, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The broader energy index rose 5.2%.

Food prices overall were unchanged for the month. Grocery prices fell 0.1%, while food away from home rose 0.2%. Restaurant meal prices were 3.5% above September 2025; full-service meals were up 3.8% and limited-service meals 3.2%. These are consumer prices, not restaurant input-cost measures.

Why does it matter?

The fuel jump puts pressure on delivery, commuting and freight budgets at the same time that households are paying more to travel. For restaurants, the gap between grocery and menu-price inflation remains a useful measure of the pressure to eat at home. Hotels and discretionary retailers should watch trip frequency and basket size as customers adjust to higher fuel bills.

A single energy-driven CPI jump is not enough to establish a new sustained inflation trend. Core prices, excluding food and energy, rose 0.3% for a second month, however, so the report does not point to a clean reversal of price pressure.

Who is most exposed?

Delivery-heavy restaurants, operators serving price-sensitive diners, retailers dependent on drive-to-store visits, and lodging businesses in car-travel markets. Exposure varies with fuel contracts, geography and customer mix.

What should businesses watch next?

The October 15 producer-price report for upstream cost pressure; weekly gasoline prices; October restaurant traffic and average checks; and the November 10 CPI release. Watch transactions and covers separately from revenue, since higher prices can lift nominal sales even when visits weaken.

Trend check: A new monthly inflation increase with a large energy component; not yet evidence of a lasting acceleration.
